Question for muslims (about cosmetics etc)?

Salam Aleykum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakaatuhu!

What do you think about perfumes and other cosmetics and beauty products what contains alcohol (alcohol denat etc) and probably pig stuffs?

i have heard that steareath and its compounds are most probably pork related (source peta)..

can i buy/use them or i commit a sin when i do that? please note that my country has no Islamic perfumes (oil based ones) and no ';the body shop'; stores.. what if i have no evidence about this steareathe because maybe it is not pork but maybe it is? :-s

i know it sounds complicated.. so what can i do?

when i buy an alcohol-free deo or body lotion i soon realize that it has steareathe or its compounds.. maybe i worry a lot but i want to know what can i do if i have no evidence about these things, nothing but my worries and doubts..

(of course i do not use perfume in front of men, only at home)Question for muslims (about cosmetics etc)?

I am including below a link to the website islam-qa.com. They give a very comprehensive answer to your questions. I'll try to hit the high points but you must read the full answer to get a full understanding.

Something that is haraam, like pork, remains haraam if it is used in other products where it does not undergo a chemical change that changes its nature. So, pork fat from a pig is haraam; pork fat in a pie crust is still haraam.

But if the nature of something changes and it no longer resembles that from which it came, and it is no longer called what it was, it is permissible. Pork bones are haraam; gelatin, which is rendered from pork bones and connective tissues, undergoes a comprehensive chemical change in the rendering process and no longer resembles what it came from, nor is it called by the same name. Thus, its use is permissible.

The cosmetics you mention may be permissible and they may not, depending on the level of change the fats or other substances have undergone. This is something you'd have to really do a chemical study on. Since there are nowadays many animal-free light and wonderful cosmetics, you can stay away from anything doubtful and still enjoy making yourself up for a party with the ladies or for your husband.

Also, a word about alcohol. Most of what is termed ';alcohol'; in perfumes does NOT come under the heading of khamr, or the type of alcohol which intoxicates. Calling it alcohol merely denotes that it has a certain chemical composition which includes some element I forget. There is a huge difference between ethyl alcohol, which is drinkable, and wood alcohol or isoproply alcohol, which would kill you. The situation there is that the word in English is the same but the substances are completely different.

You might contact the company whose products you are using. Some are happy to provide information on the origins of their ingredients. Just don't be surprised if you find there are ground up beetles in your eyeshadow!

PS. The first link is in English, though the Islam qa website offers different languages. The second site is a different one and is in Arabic.Question for muslims (about cosmetics etc)?
Muslim women around the world (including my family) wear perfume and cosmetics. I don't see anything wrong with it. Its up to you but I think that's being way too strict WS
plz stop worrying,I have a doctorate in science, the air u inhale n exhale have countless micro organisms, enjoy life before it passes
Hey there, hmm, I'm Muslim too so this question kinda caught my eye. Well, I don't think it should be a problem with the perfume. And by cosmetics, if you mean makeup, a little is always okay. You wanna look natural though. And for us, I guess it also depends on your age. I'm 15 so my mom only lets me use a little makeup sometimes for certain occasions and I really have no problem w/that. I kinda like the natural look anyway. But yea, back to my point, if you're married I guess you can wear makeup also. But yea, idk about you, but my family is somewhat religious, I mean not so upright and strict, but we still follow and keep our beliefs although living in the US. and I don't see how makeup and perfume could be of any problem (; Remember, it's the person you are inside, and the good deeds that you do that make you a GOOD person all around, if ya know what I mean. You are definitely not sinning, or considered a ';bad'; person by wearing makeup or putting on perfume. We are women. We should be able to feel pretty/smell extra special sometimes.

Hope that encouraged ya a little to not feel so bad about this.
I was about to provide a link from www.islamqa.com which sister Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid has already given you. That's a good website for your future referances. You can search the question which people already have asked and figure out.

assalam o alaikom.

i will try to answere this question. im not a scholar. i m just a student learning islam. i can tell u that u can use pig products, u just cant consume it.same thing goes for alcohol. prophet SAW restricted us from drinking alcohol because we get drunk from doing so.but if there is alcohol in ur perfune, and you're not drinking the perfume(hope ur not)its all good.by the way, the alcohol u drink and the alcohol used in perfumes are completely diffrent.pork and alocohol are haraam to eat and drink. not to wear as perfume.

he prohibited all tht stuff for alcohol tht is to be drinken. as i said b4, all tht you drink(such as wine, beer, and all those bad things) and alcohol used in perfumes are completely diffrent things. i know so because i heard a lecture about this stuff from an Alim. for pork all tht stuff again is for the meat that 1 would eat. pork causes diseases in humans(this is scientifically proven).that is why it is haraam. the stuff tht comes from pork does not have tht disease stuff cause its been chemically cleaned.
